A BlackPing Update is Coming

For a lot of 2009 the BlackPing project was in hibernation. This caused a lot of frustration for our users for which I'm very sorry. Thankfully the end of 2009 has granted us some time to work on BlackPing and a new version will be coming sometime in the first quarter of 2010.

The new version of BlackPing will include the following:

  • Better connection management. Quite a few folks have complained about tunnel errors and other connectivity issues. This version should make most of those issues go away.
  • Multiple Accounts. Just like its sister project Ping Fire, Blackping will support multiple Ping.fm accounts.
  • Location Awareness. Your current location (if you allow it, and your device allows 3rd-party use of the GPS) will be sent to Ping.fm along with your post. This means that if the end-service supports location it will now get that information.
  • Caching. BlackPing will optionally cache your services and custom triggers. This prevents the application from gathering this information each time it is loaded.
  • Refreshed UI. The UI used in the earlier versions of BlackPing was pretty terrible. In the next release the UI will be updated to look a little prettier. Although the UI still isn't quite there, it is going to get better.
  • Best-Practices Compliant Post Entry. Originally the field used to write out a post didn't support auto-capitalization, spell checking, etc. The new version of BlackPing now includes this functionality.

2009/12/31 Editor's Note: Updated post to include a new feature/bug-fix. Also fixed some spelling and grammatical errors.
